 Governor of SASO's Speech

Dr. Saad bin Othman Al-Kasabi

on World Metrology Day 2019

The field of measurement and calibration is one of the central elements of the quality infrastructure system, and one of the most important scientific and technical fields possible for economic growth and industrial development. Moreover, its importance is growing in the light of our country's precious programs of transformation to an ambitious vision.

SASO works seriously and actively to fulfill its national commitments to establish the interest in the measurement sciences in keeping with the international trends in this field. In this regard, (4) technical teams have been formed to prepare standard specifications and technical regulations in measurement and calibration disciplines. Also, SASO is continuing its efforts to introduce the importance of these sciences to achieve the regional and global leadership of our Kingdom.

The National Measurement and Calibration Center (NMCC) in SASO is one of the technical pillars of the measurement and calibration system in the Kingdom. It comprises a system of technical laboratories consisting of 30 qualitative and specialized laboratories in the science of measurement and accurate calibration. This center is the national body responsible for providing national standards for measurement and calibration services, maintaining the accuracy of national measurement standards, and then achieving the principle of metrology in linking national measurement units to the international system.

SASO has launched the legal calibration initiative within the National Transformation Program 2020, which aims to achieve fair trade requirements by consolidating the calibration system of the most important instruments used in commercial transactions. The first phase of this initiative was launched at the end of last fiscal year 2018, focusing on the calibration of fuel pumps. The initiative is planned to expand its work - if Allah wills- to include a number of other services such as calibrating scales, water meters and electricity and others.

In order to enhance the effectiveness of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in scientific forums and international activities for the development of measuring science, a delegation of SASO participated in the 26th  meeting of The General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM), which was held in Paris from 13-16 November, 2018. The Kingdom has been a full member of the International Meter Convention since 2011. At this important meeting, the results of the research aimed at redefining the Kilogram-Calvin-Ampere-Mole units. The Kingdom voted to approve the new system for measuring these units, which was approved by the consensus of Member States. The CGPM has decided to start functioning as of May 20, 2011, which is the World Metrology Day. This new system is a milestone in the science of measurement and calibration.

On this occasion, I would like to send a message of thanks and appreciation to all specialists and workers in the field of measurement and calibration for citizens of the country, for their efforts to upgrade the measurement and calibration activities in our dear country, and to achieve the aspirations...With Allah's permission.

Thank you,
