Minister of MCI sponsors inauguration ceremony of SBC next Monday


      The national committee of the Saudi Building Code (SBC) organizes next Monday the official inauguration ceremony, under the patronage of the Minister of Trade and Investment, Dr. Majid bin Abdullah Al-Qasabi, with the participation of a number of ministers and officials from several government and academic bodies.

      SBC aims to achieve safety, health and public benefit through set requirements to ensure the firmness and stability of buildings and facilitate their use, protect lives and properties from the dangers of fire and earthquakes, promote water and energy conservation practices and ensure the safety of firefighters and emergency rescues.

      The executive regulation of the SBC system, which is to be implemented in Dhu Al-Qa'da 1439 AH, is as follows: First phase: from the date of the system's entry into force until the end of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah in 1440AH. During this period, the code should be applied to the following buildings: governmental administrative buildings, tall buildings (more than 23 m), hospitals and hotels.

      The second phase will begin at the end of the first phase until the end of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah in 1441 AH. The code, in addition to the buildings specified in the first phase, will be applied to the following buildings: buildings of gatherings (mosques - sports facilities), educational buildings, commercial complexes, communication towers, industrial buildings under 23 m and high-risk buildings.

      Moreover, the SBC executive regulation clarified that the third phase will begin by the end of the second phase until the end of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah in 1442 AH. The code will be applied, in addition to what has been applied in the first and second phases, to the following buildings: buildings of gatherings (wedding halls, cinemas, and theaters), health care centers, hotel furnished apartments, motels, residential buildings, and entertainment services buildings.

      Furthermore, the fourth stage will begin by the end of the third phase and last until the end of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah in 1443 AH. The code will be implemented, in addition to what has been applied in the three phases, on the following buildings: business buildings (airports, banks, TV stations). The fifth phase will begin by the end of the fourth phase until the end of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah 1444 AH. The code will be applied, in addition to what has been applied in the four stages, on all types of buildings classified in it.

      ​15 governmental and academic bodies participated in the completion of the work of the SBC in its updated version, these include: the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs, the Ministry of Housing, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Energy, Industry and Mineral Resources, the Ministry of Trade and Investment and the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture. As well as, King Abdul Aziz City for Science and Technology, the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization, the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, the Saudi Council of Engineers, the Geological Survey Organization, Saudi Aramco and the Council of Saudi Chambers, in addition to four specialists from Saudi universities.
