SASO Calls for Public Consultations on Draft
Standard of Degradable Plastic Products
Within the framework of its keenness
to benefit from the specialized national expertise, SASO has requested public
consultations and comments on draft standard of degradable plastic products. It
has asked specialists and relevant bodies to provide it with their comments on
this standard before July 17th, 2016.
SASO has clarified that the draft standard depended on the latest
references, such as ISO standards, American standards, British standards and
others. SASO not only aims to get rid of these products by transferring them
into microparticles that are hardly visible but also hopes that the standard will
specify special items of the effect of these materials on environment, soil and
plants.
Furthermore, SASO has clarified that the
standard focused on products made of polypropylene and polyethylene flakes with
a thickness less than 250 microns as it is difficult to recycle these products,
in addition to that they are uneconomical. SASO has confirmed that the draft
standard can be viewed by everyone through its website, via this link:
It is noteworthy that the adoption of Saudi standard specifications
passes through several stages until they reach their final form. First, the
initial draft of the standard specification is prepared. Then an announcement
is made and public consultations are called for from specialists and relevant
bodies. In its turn, SASO takes into account, as much as possible, comments
received on the draft standard. Afterwards, an accreditation must be received
from the Board of Directors. Then optional Saudi standard specifications are
published in the Official Gazette (Um Al-Qura).
After that, SASO informs government bodies and chambers of commerce and industry in the Kingdom of the adopted Saudi
standard specifications.
