Electrical Measurements

After the discovery of electricity and its wide use in lighting and energy generation, the electrical measurements with all its branches, became one of the important applications of metrology in our daily life. The need for electricity is now dominating the housing, factories, energy plants, the military, health, and civil sectors at all levels. Responding to these needs, the Department of Electrical Measurements at NMCC was established to cover the calibration requests of different sectors of economy in KSA. The Department is structured from four laboratories: Voltage Laboratory, Impedance Laboratory, Power-Energy Laboratory, and Electromagnetism Laboratory to meet such wide spectrum of calibrations.

The laboratory provides calibration services for all devices (generation and reading of voltage and electric current) using high-precision reference devices, including: voltage cells, alternating voltage transformers, alternating and direct current DC and AC splitter, and the laboratory has the following measurement capabilities :
​It is one of the electricity measurement laboratories in the national center of measurement, and it is responsible for establishing, maintaining direct and alternating,( DC and AC ) voltage and current  measurement standards with reference to amperes. In addition, transmit it to all national agencies that measures voltage, DC and AC in the industrial and service sectors. The laboratory provides calibration services for all devices (generation and measuring of voltage and current DC and AC ) using high-precision reference devices, including: DC Voltage Reference Standards , alternating and direct voltage source and meter, alternating and direct current source and meter , thermal voltage converter and thermal current converter. The laboratory has the following measurement capabilities:

​The Power and Energy Laboratory is responsible for ensuring the integration of AC power and energy measurements and AC voltage and current ratio measurements conducted in Saudi Arabia into the international metrology system. The laboratory provides calibration services for power and energy meters such as active and reactive power devices, voltage and current transformers and others measuring devices. In addition, the laboratory can develop the industry activities in the fields of electrical power metrology. It has the following Calibration and Measurement Capabilities:​

The laboratory is responsible for establishing and maintaining the electrical impedance measurement standard.  Impedance is one of the electrical quantities that describes the amount of impedance in electrical conductors and it varies according to the type of electrical load (continuous and alternating resistance - capacitors - coils). There are a number of methods for measuring impedance using various measuring systems, which can be calibrated by the impedance laboratory with traceability to the international system of units, SI. The laboratory provides calibration services for high-precision impedance measuring devices such as standard resistors, standard capacitors and standard coils.  The laboratory is responsible for measuring the strength of the electromagnetic waves emitting from electronic devices, home appliances and others the emit such waves. and checking the tools for measuring them. There are a number of methods for measuring the electromagnetic field using various measuring systems that can be calibrated with the electromagnetism laboratory and assigning with traceability to the international system of units, SI. The laboratory provides calibration services for high-precision measuring devices related to the electromagnetic measurements such as magnetic and electric field sensors.
