The National Measurement and Calibration Center (NMCC)

Metrological Capabilities in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

At the end of the last century and at the beginning of the international industrial revolution, the need of unifying measurement standards around the world in accordance with an agreed Units system has emerged. In 1865, the Meter agreement was signed in Paris, which was the beginning of unifying the international weights and measures, which established the scientific basis of the International System of Units (SI). Consequently, the National Measurement and Calibration Center (NMCC) was established in all countries; to put the national standards and to make unify it with other countries’ standards, which includes 7 main standard units, and 22 derived-standard unit.

Because the organization recognized the importance of measurement and calibration as one of its activities and tasks; in 1406 corresponding to 1986 AD, the National Center for Metrology and Calibration was established. It is considered the national body entrusted with preserving and improving the national measurement standards, in addition to achieving Metrological Attribution principle of measurement results in the Kingdom to SI. The center includes (30) specialized national laboratories, it also provides contributions to serve the scientific, legal and industrial metrology in the governmental and private sectors. The center includes advanced equipment and systems in measurement and calibration scope, as well as primary and secondary national measurement standards, which are managed with national competencies, in multiple metrology scope to provide reference for measurement results to the In SI.

The National Center for Measurement and Calibration provides a variety of services, including technical consultations in establishing and developing calibration laboratories, designing and implementing calibration systems in cooperation with industrial companies, including calibration services to accredited and advanced laboratories for accreditation and to bodies and factories; to enhance production lines and raise their efficiency to comply with the quality of Saudi products by relying on accurate measurements, which leads to improve its competitiveness in the international market.

Also, the center contributes to environmental protection, health and safety of human being. Moreover, the center provides training services to raise the technical level for employees of bodies, factories and companies to carry out calibration, testing, and calculation of uncertainty in measurement results, and how to prepare calibration certificates and test reports in accordance with the requirements of the latest versions of the International Standard (ISO / IEC 17025).

The Center’s Tasks:

  • Maintaining and conserving the national standards while preserving the reference to the international standards and the International System of Units.
  • Calibrating the measurement instruments and standards with the highest level of accuracy for governmental and private agencies as well as GCC member states.
  • Providing technical consultation when working on Saudi Standard Standards Projects.
  • Providing calibration service for reference standards found in national calibration laboratories and metrological verification laboratories.
  • Supporting services page, providing calibration services for industrial equipment in different industrial and monitoring scopes.
  • Supporting services page, providing calibration service for standards of private calibration laboratories/quality assurance.
  • Follow up with the scientific developments related to the International System of Units and work to implement and publish it.
  • Presenting the Kingdom in the activities related to National Metrology Centers regionally and internationally.
  • Conducting researches in metrology.
  • Holding seminars, workshops and training courses in various scopes of metrology.
  • Participating in comparison programs regionally and internationally.
  • Providing technical consultation for the government, public and private institutions in metrology.

The National Measurement and Calibration Center (NMCC) is considered the national sector that is responsible for maintaining all the national measurement standards and achieving the reference principle by linking the basic international units with the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM).
